New Ireland Province Takes Bold Step in Fighting Neglected Tropical Diseases

  Kavieng, Papua New Guinea - November 11, 2025 - A 3 (three) day training session for clinicians and health officials kicked off today at Niu Lodge in Kavieng, New Ireland Province. The workshop focuses on identifying, treating, and managing Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as lymphatic filariasis, leprosy, and yaws. The training gives hope to the people in New Ireland Province who have lived with the debilitating effects of NTDs for decades. Many have been misunderstood, bullied, or left untreated, often suffering in silence. This morning, a woman, suffering from lymphathic filariasis walked into the training room, with a painful swollen leg, changing the perspective of participants attending the training on the importance of their work in eliminating the disease in the province.
